Scabs on chin

My cat keeps coming up with scabs on and around his chin?

RESPONSE:

It sounds like feline acne. There are a number of causes, even stress. It can be poor grooming habits, a suppressed immune system and skin conditions that produce excessive amounts of oil, causing the hair follicles to malfunction.

Switching to shallow stainless steel food dishes is beneficial. Although feline acne can be controlled it is not really cured. Antisebborrheic shampoo such as those with benzoyl peroxice (3% or less)help to break down the excessive oils. Oral of topical antibiotics like mupirocin can help with secondary bacterial infections.
