black crust between nose and mouth

My cat has some black crust between his nose and mouth. Normally he has boogers but this is close to his whiskers.... I don't know what it is, he's acting normal but I'm just concerned.

RESPONSE:

There are a number of things that this could be, most are not serious as long as it's not dried blood. He could have an allergy for instance and the list goes on. I would watch it over the next few days and if appears to get worse or his behavior changes, then I would call your vet.

If its a rash that he has scratched and made raw, then it has crusted over, there are creams you can apply but cats tend to lick off such things either with their tongue or by moistening their paw to clean it off. So you have to make sure its safe for a cat or put an Elizabethan collar on it to prevent removal of the cream or ointment.

However, my inclination would be to head for the vet if it doesn't clear up on its own.
