masking medication with flavoring

by Janet Whiteside
(Indianapolis, IN)

I need to give my geriatric cat famotidine daily. It has bitter flavor (I think). No matter how I mix it with her food she will eat all around it. What kind of flavoring trick can I use on her to make her think she is getting a treat. I smash the pill and give her approximate 1/8 of a tab daily. I do not think it would be stable in a liquid prep.

RESPONSE:

I know that there are flavorings for human medicine but don't know of it for pets. However, there are some "food pocket" items for both cats and dogs that you might try. These are on an Amazon listing on the page Pilling a Cat Scroll down the article to "Things to Try" and you will find the products.

These ones are from Amazon but you can probably get them elsewhere. I hope this helps you. Good Luck.
